What is Functional Fitness?

By: Camlin Oliver Jackson

Functional Fitness is exercise training that reestablishes proper physical function throughout the body. Functional Fitness Training programs should be purposeful, individualized, and progressive. Training is designed to meet you at your current health and fitness level. Training programs include functional movement and strength training.

At the core of human movement is posture. Programs that straighten the body, increase flexibility, mobility, and stability within the body should outline the first phase in any functional fitness program no matter what the training goal is. The next phase should include functional movement, which includes learning proper exercise form with basic exercise movements. From there load and resistance training is included in training to build muscle and strength throughout the body.

Functional fitness training is training for activities of daily living. Common "Functional Fitness Goals" are:

  • To look and feel better
  • To lower blood pressure
  • Reduce cholesterol levels
  • Be more active and move more
  • Be stronger
  • Be fit
  • Live longer
  • Improve quality of life/living
  • Reduce/eliminate depression
  • Build confidence
  • Lose Weight
  • Lower Body Fat
  • Build Muscle
  • Keep up with children/grandchildren
  • Inspire/Motivate someone else
  • And more

Functional Fitness is a safe, and effective way to begin a journey into physical fitness. Most training is done using body weight for resistance with minimal equipment. To maximize results, get the coaching of a personal trainer, or from pre built, or pre customized online training programs that can be accessed from a smart phone, tablet, or pc. Be sure to do your research or get help from a fitness and health professional with experience.
